Mid-Level Care
This typically refers to a level of care provided to individuals who require assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) but do not need constant medical supervision or intensive medical care. People in mid-level care may need help with tasks like bathing, dressing, medication management, and meal preparation. This level of care may also include some medical monitoring and assistance with mobility.
Frail Care
Frail care is a higher level of care typically provided to individuals who are elderly and frail, often due to advanced age or chronic health conditions. Frail care involves more intensive assistance with ADLs, as well as additional medical monitoring and supervision. Individuals in frail care may require help with mobility, feeding, toileting, and managing complex medical needs such as wound care or medication administration. Frail care facilities often have specialised staff and equipment to cater to the specific needs of their residents.

The History of the Lion’s Wing
The history and evolution of the Lions Wing within The Old People’s Home provide valuable insight into its development and the comprehensive care it offers to its residents.
The Lions Wing project was initiated in 1970 by the Benoni Host Lions Club, led by Dr Alec Potash and Lions Chairman Mr Charles Metcalfe. The project aimed to address the growing need for extended mid-level care for the elderly in the community. The Lion’s Wing was officially opened in 1972 and initially accommodated 60 individuals. This marked the beginning of its role as a dedicated facility for mid-level to frail care residents.
Over the years, there was a merging of the administrations of The Old Age Home and the Lions Wing, leading to the consolidation of management under one administration. This integration resulted in improved co-ordination and efficiency in delivering care and services to residents. The current administration staff is housed within the Lions Wing and oversees the management of the entire facility, including both the Lions Wing and other sections such as the Stella Kermack Home and Lions Village Retirement Cottages.
Overall, the Lions Wing stands as a testament to the commitment of the Benoni Host Lions Club and The Old People’s Home to providing quality care and support to elderly individuals in the community, from mid-level care to frail care, in a nurturing and inclusive environment.
